Overall Personality:
Matt is a bundle of emotions, a bit manic at times. One second he’ll be happy, and the next he’ll be extremely angry, or sad, or just plain apathetic. To start off, he pretty much stays the same through the years, though in the Post Potter era he tends to be more serious and doesn’t jump around all over the place as much. Matt is a very intelligent, very resourceful sort of guy, who is normally nice to someone if they aren’t interrupting him, though they mustn’t be a stupid person. He is alright with ignorance, but if someone is slow learning something (ie he has to repeat himself several times before they figure something out), he can’t stand it. He loves teaching people who can learn fast, though if they learn too fast it takes some of the fun out of it. Seeing the dawning realization of something he was teaching or laying hints out for, is what he lives for. That, and science. He loves science. He becomes an expert in muggle science and the science of magic by the time he graduates from Hogwarts. Afterwards, he got a job as a magical scientist in the magical world, and began school at a muggle university to learn more. Matt’s intelligence, and lightning fast ability to learn helped him succeed greatly in both.
However, this intelligence and resourcefulness comes with a price. Matt tends to slip into a manic episode, when he thinks especially high of himself, cannot stop talking, his thoughts bounce around, and attention is drawn to irrelevant items or unimportant items in the room, and he cannot think of anything else but achieving his goal. Though during these episodes he will not do something that goes against his moral code, he tends to do rash things that could get him seriously hurt or killed. As long as it means advancement, he is fine with putting himself at risk. However, he will not put others at risk, unless they have hurt other people and he feels they deserve being risked or tested on, or if they have been diagnosed with a certain time frame left to live and the experiment could increase that amount of time. Usually, he tests his theories on himself. It is a wonder he lives to the age of 58, at the very least, though, he did shorten his life by a lot and by the time he’s 58, he has many health issues and feels much older than he actually is, feeling more like Giovanni Cavaliere’s age (90 years). Despite this, he still keeps an optimistic view on everything and is still willing to experiment upon himself for the furthering of the magic of science.
Matt also tends to be very active, especially in his younger years, jumping all over the place, bubbling with enthusiasm, and his eyes light up whenever science is mentioned, when adventure and knowledge is a bound. He will not say no to an adventure, and he in fact, enjoys running. However, in the grand scheme of things, Matt tends to seem callous about death, or pain when it affects someone he has not grown to love, though he will try to end it, even if he doesn’t seem to care too much. When something bad happens, he tends to either forget it, or twist it until it is something good. Though, this is just his outward show, while inside he is torn up whenever he cannot save someone, or prevent pain in someone, unless of course, they deserve it in his mind, which would mean they hurt or killed someone previously or have threatened to do so in the future.
Numbing the pain for a while will
make it worse when you finally feel it.

Overall History:
Matt, Dave, Baker, whatever you call him was born to some parents who weren’t in the happiest of relationships, and in fact, divorced a month or so after his birth. And then of course, his mother got in an accident, and died shortly after. Not able to find their father, Matt and John were sent to an orphanage in a place called Ralston, in Scotland. John was adopted almost immediately by a lovely family and brought to Cardiff, away from his little brother. Matt stayed in the orphanage until he was around five years old, and then was adopted by the Bakers, who loved him dearly, unable to conceive a child themselves. They were both muggles, and worked together, both loving literature. William Baker was an author and his wife, Peri, would be his editor, though she did work with other people’s works as well. His father was not a very well-known author but wrote several novels, usually about a young person discovering they were special, one series being based off of Matt’s experience at becoming a wizard.
At school, Matt met an older student, who he became a very good friend with, despite the other having morals unlike his own. This was Matt's best friend at Hogwarts. The two got in trouble together, they had banana butterbeer, and a lovely time. However, when his friend graduated, his friend went over to Voldemort's side of the war while Matt was quite adamant on staying on the Order side. Luckily, they never faced each other. Not long after graduation, Matt became the assistant to Gio Cavaliere, where he learned a lot about the science of magic, something he fell in love with extremely quickly. Gio left, and Matt decided he would stay a couple more years, and if he didn't get a full job, he'd leave. However, in 1992, a boy came to Hogwarts. Something was odd about the boy, and it intrigued Matt. Matt soon felt like he had become the mentor to the boy, but there was something more about him. Eventually, Matt found out the boy was also an orphan, and when Matt went to Dumbledore, Dumbledore informed him that the boy was his brother, Logan Greyson Smith, half-brother, as Matt's mom was dead. Matt had a talk with the young caretaker's assistant, and Logan seemed to not care that he had a brother. Instead Logan seemed more interested in finding out who was behind the disappearances of the Chamber of Secrets. Matt decided he would stay until his brother was out of school, and then he would leave if he hadn't a full time teaching job by that point.
Matt and Logan seemed to grow somewhat closer, if one could call it that. Matt didn't understand Logan at all, but an occasional hello his way, and sometimes even a question or two asked to him made Matt believe he was getting closer to his brother. However, as the years progressed, Matt began to notice his own brother's insanity, how he would hear sounds where there were no sounds, and some days come to school after cutting off his own ear (and Madame Pomfrey healing it back on, as the ear would not have been magically removed). Matt talked to Dumbledore about it, and Dumbledore tried to help the boy, but nothing seemed to help Logan. Harry Potter was always a year ahead of Logan.
When 1997 and the whole war thing came about, Logan had left Hogwarts prematurely and pursued a career in the mercenary division, where he quickly got a name for never failing a job he was given, hired by both the Order and Death Eaters. However, right before the battle of Hogwarts, Logan was hired to kill Matt, as the Death Eaters didn't want to just kill Matt, especially with the sort of family he had with the other professors, and he was almost always in the castle and they wanted it to be a 'safe place for the pure' (luckily, Matt was able to prove without a doubt he was a pureblood, despite being brought up by muggles). Matt believed the boy to really be sided with the Death Eaters, and the two fought quite hard against each other, eventually ending in what Matt thought to be Logan's death.
Fast forward nearly twenty years and Logan appears again, apparently not dead. But only Matt was to know. And Matt kept secrets well, or well enough. After the Battle of Hogwarts and being yet again denied a full teaching position, he left Hogwarts to become a scientist, something he was going to do before Logan showed up at Hogwarts. He stays at that job until the day he dies, though he would roam frequently having wonderful adventures around the world.
